UPDATED 6-15-2015 VIDEOS 1-4

For those of you, who don't know how to use Blender but would like to learn, I would suggest you watch these NEW short videos. I am know expert, but I learned Blender from taking classes with Haven via Builders Brewery and Ditko University.  Her teaching style made sense to me and helped me overcome years of being unable to use Blender.  I hope this helps you as well.

Please check out her YouTube page for the rest in the series.  Currently, she has parts 1-12 posted.  For your convenience, I have posted the first Haven's first Beginning Blender Video link below.

MAYA FOR BEGINNERS--BASIC COURSE--FREE

Image
After grumbling and growling...A LOT....I began researching information about the 3-D modeling software called Maya.  I know just what every hobbyist SL creator needs is another software package learn, right?  Well, if the rumors are true, SL2 will make use of said software, which ain't cheap!  I am sure there is a very good reason, besides alienating beginning or new Second Life (SL) creators, for this rumored choice in the new platform. Unfortunately, my technical expertise is such I don't see the reasoning behind this. I pray that LL is making a good choice as part of their business model and not trying to block out beginning creators.  Creativity is such a part of the current world and a huge draw to many.

So, rather than just keep complaining about it, I have set out to see what I can learn about this software, which is completely new to me.  Fortunately, as part of higher education, I am able to have access to this software.  And, I apologize to those of my readers, who …

MAYA THE NEXT GENERATION SOFTWARE FOR SECOND LIFE2??

Image
Apparently, it is rumored the new Second Life new generation platform (SL2), currently being created by Philip Linden and his team (or, whoever is creating it), will only allow mesh items created via Auto Desk's Maya software.  While this is not the first time I have heard this rumor, I must say I am not overly happy when I heard it the first time and is am still not very happy as a hobbyist creator or, as a perspective resident.  I can understand Phillip wanting to create a great product and take advantage of the upgrades that have have happened since Second Life (SL1) was originally created. I understand the need to be progressive and yet, I still find it terribly sad IF SL2 IS ONLY going to allow Maya builders to be part of the new world being created.

One of the things that has always been a plus for me in SL1 is the creativity and skills Residents have to create the world what it is.  Sure, Linden Labs has provided the virtual server space and the functionality for the worl…

NEW HELP FORUM FOR MARVELOUS DESIGNER USERS

Image
I don't know about anyone else, but I have some difficulty, at times, finding information I need for Marvelous Designer.  Or, I have a question specifically related to Second Life needs for my MD designs. While you might find some information, it is either the same old thing, not very explanatory, or done in such a way it is difficult to understand.  While the MD forums are okay, I don't really feel terribly welcome there because it feels like everyone is either a professional in some related field or is not an SL User and doesn't' understand what I am needing.

Well, a few days ago, Lori Griffiths, of Fearlessmakers.com, you know the lady from the YouTube videos I keep going on and on about? Lori started a new forum for Users of Marvelous Designer.  This forum is not officially linked to the company but a forum for US, the USER, of MD product.  It is for our use to ask questions, share knowledge,  and help one another when we have problems.  We can share the patterns an…

MEASURING SECOND LIFE AVATAR IN MARVELOUS DESIGNER--A BETTER METHOD

Image
I am not really satisfied with the June 2, 2015 regarding measuring.  It was my feeble attempt at filling a empty spot of information. The article had some good graphics and links and even a few tips you might find useful but, overall the method I was trying to demonstrate was rather cumbersome.

This method does work, but is confusing.  So, I thought hhhmmm, let's see if Lori Griffiths can help with this task.  Sure enough, Lori rose to the challenge and created a video for measuring avatars/models in Marvelous Designer.  She even uses an SL avatar in the latter part of the video and provides some project files as well!

PARAMETRIC FITTING OF MESH--COMING SOON IN AVASTAR

Image
Anyone else have trouble using Blender's weight painting system?  I know I do and is a show stopper for me when it comes to fitting mesh clothing for Second Life.   Once again, Gaia Clary has been working hard to update her Avastar add-on to help make fitting and weighting of mesh easier.

While this product is not in actual production yet, I thought you might like to watch her video of what she is working on.

Give it a watch on YouTube, be sure to "Like it" and let Gaia know her working is greatly appreciated.

MARVELOUS DESIGNER -- HOW TO MEASURE YOUR SECOND LIFE AVATAR

SECOND LIFE AVATAR MEASUREMENTS?

A recent project of mine has been to find the measurements of the Second Life Avatar (standard default size).  I see this question semi-often in some of the Blender groups in Second Life (SL) but, I never gave it much thought after the initial "wow some folks are just as anal as I am".  So, when I began my search, I thought surely, by now, someone has collected such measurements for more precise creation of garments for SL!  I even asked in various groups and did my own Google search and found nothing.

What I did find was a measurement add-on tool for Blender, which I think will be handy when I am in building and modeling mode but, that really doesn't help me with measurements in Marvelous Designer.  I want to send a big THANK YOU to Garvie Garzo and Tin Shelter for sharing this add-on information.  For those building modelers out there, you may wish to try this feature for more precise building features.
