MARVELOUS DESIGNER - PATTERN CREATION FOR 1:1 SCALING USING GIMP

Image
Today, I thought I would present more about pattern creation with Marvelous Designer 4 (MD).  I been watching a lot of videos this past week discussing things from fabric qualities, MD fabric presets, pattern tracing to using QCAD to create mesh clothing for my avatar in Second Life using MD.  In the process of watching all of these videos, I remembered a YouTube video I had seen long time ago, actually created by a Second Life member.  This is not so much about how to draft your own pattern but take an existing RL pattern and converting it for use with Marvelous Designer.

I believe Ashasekayi (no, I don't know her full SL name) use to teach a How to make a Chinese lantern using Blender class at Builders Brewery quite a few years ago.  I have not seen this class repeated in recent times so I do not know if she is even still in SL.  I do know from reading the Marvelous Designer forums in the past she use to be quite active and assisted people quite frequently on that forum but see n…

MARVELOUS DESIGNER - DETAILED INFORMATION HOW TO USE MD FABRIC PRESETS

Image
Today, we are going to look at fabric and the Marvelous Designer Fabric Presets, what they are and how to use them.

I am a huge "Lori Griffiths" fan and in a "I wanna share with you" mood.  I had really considered keeping all this information to myself but, how could I when the information is so very valuable?  Lori's videos are clear and concise and explain things about Marvelous Designer I have been unable to find elsewhere.  These videos are a MUST WATCH for any MD beginner; they are even excellent for intermediate and advanced users.

Lori is the first person I have come across that just GETS IT!  She understands real world design and garment creation AND, Lori understand the 3D modeling world.  Rarely, do you see the worlds merge into one; it is even rarer to find information shared with others.  If that were not enough, Lori uses Marvelous Designer (MD) to demonstrate in a simple, straightforward, and easy manner how to do things.

NOW if we could get her …

MUST SEE--MARVELOUS DESIGNER BEGINNER TUTORIAL

Image
I most certainly wish this tutorial had been available when I started out with Marvelous Designer.  It would have saved much searching, hair pulling and the addition of numerous gray hairs appearing, painful headaches not to mention the hours of frustration I went through.  I been using MD for awhile but there were a number of things I didn't know before I watched this video!

PATTERN DRAFTING, BASE TEMPLATES, SLOPERS, BLOCKS OH MY!--PATTERN MAKING FOR MARVELOUS DESIGNER

Image
I have been experimenting with Marvelous Designer (MD) and Blender in my quest to make mesh clothing for Second Life (SL).  I am a hobbyist and damn proud of it!  I do this because I enjoy creating and learning...not to make money.  While I am not the quickest learner, I keep getting distracted by other project but, I always return at some point in time to pick up where I left off.

Today, I want to talk about pattern creation or the drafting of patterns.  I have discussed this subject in the past to some extent, but as I learn more, I think an update is needed for sharing.  Sure, with Marvelous Designer you don't really need to know much about real world clothing design, pattern making, or sewing.  You can watch a few of the MD's introductory tutorials, make a few rectangular or circular shapes and voile you have a skirt, shirt or other items. You don't even need to trace patterns!

Granted, what you make with simple shapes may be what you want then again, it may not turn …

UNDERSTANDING SECOND LIFE (SL) BONES & VOLUME BONVES FOR FITTED MESH (UPDATED 5-25-2015)

Image
5-25-2015 I am updating my original blog post due to new information from Gaia Clary, who is the original creator of this set of videos.  I have posted the newest video at the bottom so they run in order.  Where I have updated or added text, I will try to italicize for your convenience.

Gaia Clary has posted a couple of very informative short video discussing Second Life (SL) Bones & Collision/Volume Bones.  Her latest video discussed rigging an she made for this particular set of tutorials.  I thought I would share these with you in case you miss them via other sources.

Please note, as newer videos in this series becomes available, I will continue to update this post so you will have them in order and future resources.

For those of you new to mesh clothing, especially fitted mesh, I think this a must see video.  It gives you a short explanation regarding the SL bones and the hidden collision/Volume bones and a bit about how they work.  There is even a teaser at the end of the v…

FIRESTORM CRASHES WHEN UPLOADING TEXTURES & MESH--MAC ONLY

I don't know if anyone else has had this problem with the newest version of the Firestorm Beta Viewer, but since yesterday, every time I tried to upload a texture or mesh to SL I crashed. I spent hours trying to uninstall, reinstall different versions of the viewer and nothing helped.  I searched and found nothing on the FS Wiki...it all looked like gobblity gook when results were received.  I am running a Mac with Yosemite and was attempting to use the Phoenix mode choice for my viewer.  So with little self help, I filed a JIRA, which was turned into a support ticket.  The answered I received is a workaround and is a bit surprising this has not fixed yet since it is an older issue.
It seems Firestorm and/or LL can't accommodate the different views we Mac Users have in viewing files and it effect uploading a texture or mesh item if you use anything but List or Column View, depending on your OS version.  But, thankfully, Firestorm offers the following solution.
This inform…
